Mario Del Chiaro’s story began here in Santa Barbara California, where he still lives today. Mario served in the Air Force during WWII and upon his return enrolled at UC Berkeley and received his Ph.D. in 1956 on an Etruscan topic, the “Genucilia Group” and was only the second Ph.D. produced in Berkeley’s Art History Department. Upon graduation, he accepted a teaching position at the University of California, Goleta, and that was the beginning of the Art History Department at UC Santa Barbara. He has participated in excavations from all over the World and through the course of his career has published well over 100 scholarly articles.
